Staying motivated isn’t easy if you can’t pinpoint the exact reason or moment you falter in your consistency. While the point of staying motivated toward your goals isn’t always for success, never allowing yourself to experience success because you always sabotage your motivation will only make it less likely that you stay consistent in the future.

While the frustration and discouragement of watching yourself do the same things over and over again, only to experience the same result, is undeniable, motivation is the willingness to continue on even when it seems hopeless. The key is to recognize what fears convince you that the sacrifice of time and energy isn’t worth the potential success. Furthermore, it’s about understanding that the true success is the cultivation of skills and resilience throughout the process, even when you don’t achieve a specific outcome.

Below are a few journaling prompts to help you identify why you might be struggling with motivation and how to better understand what you need to feel capable enough to work through it:

  1. What does motivation mean to you? What is the image you have in your mind of your most motivated self?

  2. Do you equate being motivated with being successful? If so, does the pressure of success affect your motivation?

  3. When do you notice your motivation dip most frequently? Is there something that triggers this dip?
